Labiaplasty

When the labia are enlarged, this may be seen as an unsightly bulge of the crotch, cause difficulty in hygienic care, rub and become irritated when wearing tight pants, cause pain during sexual intercourse, or it can cause embarrassment because of the appearance. When the enlargement is uneven, it will appear asymmetrical. To a lesser extent the labia majora can present with the same problem.

These can all be corrected by labiaplasty, which is a minor procedure done under local anesthesia as an outpatient. Labiaplasty surgery can improve the appearance of the labia and remove issues negatively affecting a woman’s sex life.

What is Labiaplasty Surgery?

Labiaplasty is a minor procedure to reduce enlarged labia or to correct asymmetry of both the labia minora and majora. It is usually done under local anesthesia as an outpatient.

The length of the labiaplasty procedure will depend on the techniques used and the amount of tissue to be altered or removed. Generally, the procedure takes one to two hours to perform.

There are two main types of labiaplasty: wedge resection and linear resection. Details of these are beyond the scope of this presentation. Suffice it to say, wedge resection when done by a trained surgeon gives a much smoother edge of the labia, less visible incision and better correction of the vertical excess of the labia. Linear resection is easier to perform, and, in cases where there are unsightly discoloration (usually darken), this can be easier to remove with linear resection. Any woman who has enlarged or asymmetrical labia can benefit from labiaplasty, especially if they also have pain during intercourse.

Recovery After Labiaplasty Surgery

Because labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to return home the same day as the surgery to rest and recover. As long as you follow post-surgical care instructions correctly, the recovery process will be as short and comfortable as possible.

There will be a degree of swelling and bruising in the treatment region. Do not have sexual intercourse for three to six weeks after the procedure, as the area will still be healing at this time. For six weeks, it will be best to avoid thongs and g-strings. If you use tampons, you will need to switch to pads for around 10 days.

Avoid smoking before and after your procedure. Smoking causes a decline in skin health and can result in other complications, extending the healing process.

You will only need to take around two to five days off from work to recover from labiaplasty. If physically strenuous activities are required during work, more time may be needed. It will be three weeks before you can return to your normal exercise routine.

Once three months have passed, the full healing process will have taken place and you will be able to enjoy your full results.
